Running Your Own Creative Business Course

The Centre for Screen Business would like to offer you the opportunity to attend 'Running your own creative business' from 17-19 June in Sydney.

About the course

Running your own creative business is a three day course.

In the early 1990s Monica developed the course because she desperately needed to do a course like it. She was finding the business of freelancing increasingly complicated, and suffered through a number of so-called business courses that were helpful in part, but hardly the comprehensive coverage she needed.

Course structure

Business: How to set yourself up, including the truth about business plans, getting an ABN and registering a business name.

Money: Managing your finances, both personal and business. Figuring out what to charge for your work, and the difficulties involved in getting some clients to pay. Plus, the hardest trick of all - making your irregular income last in the tough times and planning for the future.

Tax 1: The necessary evils of understanding the GST and how it really applies to you. Also, working with PAYG so you don't end up in tax debt. You'll also get a look at a real Business Activity Statement and go through how to fill it out step-by-step.

Tax 2: The awful and boring essentials of income tax, including the various obscure tests and special considerations for creative people. How to prove you're in business and not a hobbyist.

The Law: copyright and contracts. We also look at moral rights, sedition and defamation. Learn how to avoid expensive lawyers, rely on your common sense, and trust your gut instincts. Includes real-life examples of contracts.

Marketing: All the essentials are here, with detailed information about all the inexpensive tricks of marketing that you can use for yourself. We also take a detailed look at the our secret weapon - word of mouth.
