A Thousand Splendid Suns

Posted Date: 09 September 2008 at 01:54:40PM

Today I finished the International Bestseller, A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, author of another highly acclaimed book, The Kite Runner, which has been produced into a film and is now available on DVD. I highly recommend these stories.

A Thousand Splendid Suns has opened a gate to my heart. For a long time I have wanted to understand the situation in Afghanistan. To understand why women's rights were violated and abolished, why they must wear a burqa, what the values of these women are, why they live the way they do and, most of all, what they think of us Westerners. Do they hate us for the bombings, the devastation of their country, the loss of their loved ones, the brutality they witness daily and their displacement in refugee camps in neighboring countries? The list of tragedies goes on.

Since 2003 I have felt, as an innocent and privileged citizen of the world, a bystander to the war in Iraq and the occupation in Afghanistan, as though I have blood on my hands.

In my heart of hearts I want the people and children to know that I do not agree with what my government and other Western governments have done in their countries and that I care what happens to them.

Up until now I did not know what I could do, but now that Kahled Hosseini has opened the gate to my heart, I can do something. Hosseini has a website, www.khaledhosseini.com, and this is where you can find information to extend your hand and provide assistance to the children of Afghanistan. For every wrong done there must be a right done.

How is it that the human heart can care for others without knowing their names, never having shared in laughter or a meal, never having seen how they live? This, in my opinion, is the mystery of the human heart and, thank God, for it is the only thing that can bring about change.
