Victorian Bushfires 2009

Posted Date: 11 February 2009 at 05:28:21PM

Well, it has been an unsettling and emotional few days. Our country is basically in mourning right now. We just can't believe that this could happen on such a big scale and that so many people have lost everything, including their loved ones. The death toll is expected to reach over 300 in the coming days. The RSPCA has been inundated with sick and dying animals. Some of the fires are still out of control and many bodies still have not been identified. There is still so much work to be done even before the communities can start rebuilding.

I guess what little light has come out of this is the absolute coming together of Australians. Everyone from the fire fighters to the volunteers to the hospital workers to people who have donated have shown such deep compassion that it really makes me proud to be part of such a strong and loving Nation.

I think it's safe to say that not a single person has been left out in the cold. It is quite amazing what Australia achieved in the first 24 hours of the disaster and what we continue to achieve on an hourly basis.

I received a touching photo of a CFA Volunteer giving a poor Koala a much needed drink via email. I would say that that animal is probably one of the lucky ones. No one in that fire, including the animals, got out unscathed, whether it be emotionally or physically. BUT the unity of human and wild animal in the picture and the fact that the CFA Volunteer cares enough to stop and help a suffering animal is a beautiful thing and it's something we can all hang on to in the face of such adversity.

I have to say, I've never been so confronted by a Natural Disaster as I have by the Victorian Fires this year. Perhaps because it's so close to home. I don't know.

Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts with you all and share some of these feelings that I and, I imagine, many others have been experiencing over the last few days.

PS. There is a video circulating on You Tube of the Koala and the CFA Volunteer. You can check it out here -  Warning - this clip is simultaneously touching and heart wrenching.
