Selling and Marketing Yourself

It may sound weird, but you, as an actor, are a sellable product. That’s why you need to market yourself.
It is great to write a casting director an email or give them a phone call letting them know that you are around and available, but casting directors tend to be busy people with a high volume of correspondence coming in everyday. It is easy for your email to get lost in the fluctuating mass of client emails and that’s why it’s a good idea to think about old fashioned methods of letting yourself be known.
Yes I am talking about the postal service. No, not the band, the ACTUAL postal service.
Send a postcard to a casting director and/or industry professional through snail mail instead of email and it will help you stand out from the crowd. Avoid monster sized packages and keep it clean and simple. A small headshot and CV will suffice or the flyer for the play that you’re currently or soon-to-be appearing in or, better yet, a showreel. This way the casting director will have a reference when considering great people for their next project…and you never know, they may even give you feedback.
